Reparations Daily (ish) Vol. 26
Happy Friday! No Hot Takes section today. Here are some of the articles I think you should check out when you get a chance to take a beat today:
As reported in this Press-Citizen article, an Iowa Truth & Reconciliation Commission has been charged with bearing “witness to the truth of racial injustice in Iowa City and to carry out restorative justice, through the collection of testimony and public hearings, with such work to include a recommendation to the Council of a plan for dedicating and/ or renaming public spaces and/ or rights of way in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement,” is debating whether or not the commissioners should be compensated for their time and labor in regard to the work. This story leaves me wondering how many more local truth and reconciliation commissions we might see in the coming years, and what they will be charged with.
The Center for American Progress released a report outlining the various policy solutions. Surprisingly, reparations are not included on their list even though the organization has backed the solution in other papers.
Dr. William ‘Sandy’ Darity was on Black News Channel with Marc Lamont Hill to discuss reparations. We will be featuring a Q&A with Dr. Darity next week. The Center he runs at Duke recently received a $300,000 grant to do further research around reparations.
With radical love,
Trevor
