Happy Friday!
As you’ve probably noticed, I missed the Monday and Wednesday edition of Reparations Daily (ish) this week. I had/have a lot on my plate as I transition out of my current role at Surdna and into a new one (announcement of where to come), recover from Covid, and juggle the numerous side projects I have going on, so apologies!
But, as the very wise Marshawn Lynch once said, it is so important to take care of our bodies, and that includes both our “chicken and our mentals,” so I am glad I took a little break. Watch the inspirational interview below.
Tomorrow morning, at 10:00 am ET, I’ll be joining my friends at the Racial Justice Collaborative for a conversation around how wealth from slavery built the modern U.S. economy and how reparations could and should be used as a solution to close the resulting racial wealth gap. Here is the link to the event. I hope you can join me for a critical conversation.
Some articles you may want to check out include:
One of my favorite reporters, Tracy Jan of the Washington Post, spent months writing this analysis of all the racial justice pledges made in the wake of the murder of George Floyd to see where and who they flowed to.
This Inside Philanthropy piece which ponders where progressive philanthropy is as conservatives stoke the critical race theory wars.
This ABC News piece which highlights how teachers are protesting the racist and anti-critical race theory legislation being proposed and passed in their states. For context, the last major teacher protest was in 2018 when thousands went on strike because of low pay.
No Hot Takes today, but I’ll be back next week!
Lastly, we reached 200+ subscribers this week. I appreciate all of you and hope you can continue to share this newsletter within your circles.
With radical love,
Trevor
